One thing that my shelter is good at is getting the word out about Chicago's homeless pet population. In fact, PAWS started out by kind of shoving the whole euthanasia problem in people's faces and making them realize that Chicago and its citizens needed to work together and make some major changes. It helped to have Oprah on their side.
Every summer PAWS does several major adoption events, including one right on Chicago's very own Magnificent Mile. Most of our summer events are part of our Angels With Tails program. Angels With Tails is a series of adoption events run by PAWS and several other shelters, and hosted in major stores on Michigan Avenue. Imagine going to Tiffany & Co to adopt your puppy! But that is the reality of it, these stores host our volunteers and animals for the day while the adoption event goes on and the animals get adopted. It is a great way to really bring our cause to the public, I mean how can you ignore that?
The Angels With Tails program seems to work but up until last year we would only do the big adoption event once in the summer. Last year we started doing three AWT sessions, one for each month of the summer, and they went very well. The plan is that this year will be the same with the first event happening on Michigan Avenue this weekend. Unfortunately this weekend's event is going to have to be postponed due to weather and safety concerns. But fear not, because all of those puppies and kitties will still have their chance to be adopted when we have our own special event with extended hours at our adoption center! Great news for the animals, but it is going to make tomorrow a hell of a work day for me!
It is all part of the cause though, and I am very passionate about my cause. None of my fosters are AWT featured animals, but since they are hosting the event at our adoption center and my remaining kittens are living up there right now, my guys will have a much better chance at being adopted this weekend. Super exciting! Plus we still have our two other Angels With Tails events happening later this summer, which adds up to a lot of new homes for pets! Its going to be a great summer!
